This May 29th, you are invited to express the poetry of this mystical Mexican spirit with Cardenxe’s Annual Bartender Contest.
Cardenxe is a voyage in a bottle. It’s a sotol focused on reflecting its roots—the land and history of its home in Northern Mexico—transporting you there through every sip. “Cardenxe is an artisanal, terroir-driven sotol at the intersection of art and music, produced in the North of Mexico,” says Luigi Ambrosi, co-founder of Cardenxe. “We aim to offer a layered gastronomic experience with our different sotol expressions revealing the identity of their origin and the signature personality of their production style.”
Through Cardenxe’s Annual Bartender Contest, bartenders can dive deep into sotol’s identity—a spirit defined by its distinct earthiness, a flavor profile distinctly defined by where it originates. While other famous Mexican spirits come from the agave plant, sotol comes from Dasylirion, a desert shrub plant that is in fact part of the asparagacea family. This plant grows wild in the regions of Chihuahua, Durango, and Coahuila.
In the words of Ambrosi, to honor the anniversary of Cardenxe and the history of sotol, tradition calls for a good old Mexican standoff. In the bar industry’s case, that means an exhilarating bartender’s contest.
This competition brings together skilled bartenders with one objective: to get creative with sotol. Every year has a theme. Last year, it was ‘Curados’ the Chihuahan custom of infusing sotol. This year, it’s all about terroir.
No, terroir isn’t just for wine. Sotol’s flavor profile is heavily influenced by where the Dasylirion plant grows. This year’s competition theme, Tomando Tierra, offers an opportunity for bartenders to experiment with each of the three Cardenxe Sotol’s expressions through innovative and original cocktails, highlighting a sense of place.
Don’t miss an opportunity to take part in Cardenxe’s Annual Bartender Contest, with sign-ups open until April 15th and the official competition taking place on May 29th in New York City.
